Medical weight loss programs are one of the safest and most effective methods for weight loss, allowing patients to lose and keep off excess weight to significantly reduce their risks of developing weight-related health conditions.
Ozempic is the name brand of the medication semaglutide that has been FDA-approved for use on patients with type 2 diabetes to help them manage their blood sugar levels but is frequently prescribed as a weight loss medication. The medication is very effective for use as part of medical weight loss programs due to its efficacy in reducing the patient’s appetite, making maintaining a calorie deficiency much easier. It works by lowering blood sugar levels by causing the pancreas to produce more insulin and decrease the amount of sugar produced by the liver, which in turn also works to slow down the digestive processes. With food passing through the digestive system at a slower rate, the brain is convinced that it is fuller for longer, allowing the patient to consume fewer calories without experiencing significant food cravings and decreasing the risk of binge eating.
Ozempic is a very effective medication when used as prescribed for medical weight loss but does come with some side effects, making it not the best option for every individual. To be eligible to take Ozempic as a weight loss medication, patients will need to be considered either obese or overweight, with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher along with a weight-related health condition such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes. It should also only be used as part of a medical weight loss program that includes a calorie-deficient diet and a regular exercise regimen along with medical supervision to ensure that the medication remains effective and safe for the patient. The medication will start on a lower dosage to ensure that the patient responds well and will gradually increase in dosage if it proves to remain safe and effective to do so. There are also some health conditions and medications that are contraindications for Ozempic, meaning that a different medication or course of treatment will be recommended for some patients.
Since patients need to start on a fairly low dose of Ozempic to ensure that they respond well to the medication, there will likely only be subtle weight loss results within the first few weeks of treatment. As long as the patient is responding well to the medication and can continue increasing the dose, they will likely be able to notice a more significant weight loss within around 8 weeks of starting treatment. On average, patients will be able to lose around 15 pounds after about three months on Ozempic for weight loss. To lose weight efficiently, patients must follow all other components of their medical weight loss program including their recommended calorie-deficient diet and exercise regimen as that will force the body to turn to the stored excess fat to burn for energy as fuel for exercise rather than consumed calories.
As long as the patient responds well to the medication and can eventually take the maximum recommended dose, patients can expect to lose around 15% of their body weight after about 17 to 18 months of using Ozempic as part of a medical weight loss program. The total amount of weight that a patient can lose while taking Ozempic heavily depends on how much weight they need to lose to achieve a healthy, sustainable weight, and for how long they can continue with their medical weight loss program. Being able to maintain the calorie deficient diet and continue to maintain a regular exercise schedule will be vital in losing a substantial amount of weight as well. The total amount of weight that each patient can lose will vary a bit as everyone responds a bit differently to this type of treatment, but with regular medical supervision and following all other recommendations included in the treatment plan, the patient is far more likely to achieve success.
